My Teaching Journey: 20+ Years of Empowering Students Around the World
For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching and tutoring both native and non-native English speakers from around the globe. My youngest student was just 5 years old, and my oldest was 75! Working with such a wide range of students has taught me how to adapt my teaching methods to meet the needs of every individual, regardless of their age, background, or learning style. 🌍
I started my educational journey at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, USA, where I earned my B.S. in Communication Studies & Literature (Language Arts) and ESL. 🎓 From there, my path took me across the world to Woosong University in Daejeon, South Korea, where I continued my education in TESOL while teaching English to eager students.
Teaching in South Korea and China: A Life-Changing Experience
After completing my studies in South Korea, I spent nearly seven years teaching English Literature and ESL to middle and high school students in Shanghai, China. My students were highly motivated individuals, many of whom dreamed of attending universities in the U.S. This experience gave me unique insight into the challenges that non-native English speakers face when preparing for higher education in English-speaking countries.
Returning to the U.S., I brought this wealth of knowledge back with me, working as an ESL professor and writing center coordinator at colleges and universities in Davenport, Iowa. I’ve dedicated my career to helping students navigate academic challenges and develop the skills they need to thrive in North American academic culture.

I believe in the power of personalized learning. Every student is unique, and their learning journey should reflect that. I work with each individual to tailor strategies that maximize their potential, helping them reach their academic and personal goals.
Passions Beyond the Classroom: Music, Personal Development, and Fitness
When I’m not teaching, I spend my time immersed in my personal passions. One of the most significant parts of my life has been music. 🎶 I’ve played the trumpet, piano, and guitar since I was 12 years old. My passion for music took me on incredible adventures, including touring with a band to support U.S. and Korean soldiers stationed in South Korea.
But my interests go beyond music. I’ve always been deeply interested in Personal Development, Philosophy, and Spirituality. I find inspiration from Stoicism, Existentialism, Positive Psychology, and Zen Buddhism—philosophies that have saved and transformed my life many times over. These principles are also central to how I teach and mentor students, helping them build mental resilience and find purpose in their academic journey. 🌱
I also have a background in bodybuilding and am rekindling my passion for health and fitness. I believe that maintaining a balanced life is crucial for personal success, and I aim to inspire my students to achieve balance as they pursue their academic goals.
